In today’s society it’s never been more accepted to work from home, even looked on with envy. The days of a gender based economy with the male spending his days away at work and from his family and the female at home to feed and clothe the children took a pendulum ride, like any great change in society, to the polar opposite with both parents working long days in career jobs and spending large portions of their wages on someone else to look after their children. The need to be seen working longer, harder hours than your contemporaries was a source of pride not frustration. The mantra of being available 24/7, juggling 2 kids, a relationship, a harsh work environment and vacations, when taken, as full as their daily life has become a reality.
However, the pendulum has begun to swing back to arguably the best opportunity for a work/ life balance that our society has ever experienced. It’s broken down the traditional gender roles to an opportunity for both to grow their careers, both be equally involved in a family life if they so choose and enabled us the freedom of travel and long term movement throughout the world with very few barriers. The ability to work from home successfully and not be chastised as only having a “half career” or “amateur” status has taken many that are willing to take the chance into a whole new realm of lifestyle that I think, as others begin to see how much the benefits outweigh the losses, will be embraced by a greater and greater number of intelligent, career minded individuals as well as those that may have been stuck in a job that was never what they really wanted or played to any of their strengths.
So, how do you change your life and swing the pendulum back to an area that you control? Here are the top 5 things you should consider when deciding to work from home and make money doing it.
- You don’t need to do the same thing you’re doing now
Many people think that working from home simply means taking the exact same thing that they’ve been doing in an office all their life and doing it from home. Working from home is not just a great opportunity to reinvent yourself but also your career. Is the job title that you have right now actually transferrable to a home based business? Do you actually love what you do or is there something else that you would prefer to be doing that you can use the skills you’ve obtained over the years? Just because someone has been doing your job for a hundred years exactly the same doesn’t mean there isn’t a better way. Can you put out a better product or service than you were doing at your previous employer? Is there small niche opportunities that the company was too big to go after? What was the number one client complaint, is there an opportunity to address that problem? Or can you really see yourself doing the same thing just at home for the rest of your life?
- Look for alternate opportunities
Just because you were a great lawyer or a great cook or a great delivery driver or nurse it doesn’t mean you can’t be great at something else as well. Something you love even more. Are you a great golfer, an avid scuba diver, really good at home renovations? These are all opportunities for you to do something different that you’re already good at and you love doing. Find your passion and discover a way to make that your new work from home career. As the saying goes if you love what you do you’ll never have to work again. Take this time of change to look at every aspect of your life, do you want to be healthier, more active, eat better, travel more, spend more time fishing, more time sailing? Look at your life as a whole and think about how you can incorporate your ideal lifestyle into your new work from home career.
- Research potential Careers
Now that you’ve decided the world is your oyster you need to figure out which one you want to open. Which is the biggest, juiciest oyster out there. Look at all the things you love, all the things you’re great at and start brainstorming a career within those. Look online for what other successful people are doing, what sites are getting great traffic and comments. Who is making it in your niche and how can you do it better? Are there opportunities left unopened, problems left unsolved? Is there some unique piece of information missing, is there a skill set that hasn’t been created yet? These are all things you want to look for, these are all areas that you have an opportunity to build a new life around and make a great living doing. Search for something you can do from home, has a great opportunity for a great income and something you could genuinely love doing. If you find these three factors in one, you’ve got a winner.
- Give yourself the opportunity to succeed
Once you’ve made the decision it’s time to burn the proverbial boats. Make sure you have enough savings for at least 6 month, do everything you can while you’re still working and still have an income coming in. Many times you can overlap the two until your work from home career starts making you money. Ensure that you’re financially secure for when you transition so that you can dedicate all your energy to making sure you succeed and not worry about the bills. If you have a partner perhaps one of you transitions over while the other is still earning. Maybe one of you blazes the trail for the other to follow? Regardless of how you do it make sure you’ve budgeted for not just your personal expenses but also your business expenses and then when you’re sure that you’ve done as much research as you can and you’ve lined up your balls as neatly as you can it’s time to take the plunge and move onto the final and usually both the scariest and most exhilarating step.
- Just do it!
The biggest part where people get stuck is when it comes down to just taking the plunge, deciding that you can make money working from home and having the courage to do it. So, stop thinking about it and change your life and make the best decision of your life, you won’t regret it!
